The event will start at 10:30 AM with refreshments and a chance to meet other writers. The program will begin at 11:15 AM with Rachel Starnes presenting “Tackling the Problem of Memory in Memoir” and Richard Z. Santos presenting “Get Unstuck: Tools to Move Your Story Forward,” followed by a moderated discussion with our two presenters about the path to publication. We’ll end with audience questions.

Tackling the Problem of Memory in Memoir” with Rachel Starnes

This talk explores the problem of memory through literature, art, and neuroscience, asking how writers work with imperfect, conflicting recollections while still building a trustworthy narrative voice. We’ll unpack the tension between objective truth and narrative truth, and offer practical strategies—and exercises—for handling reconstructed memories in memoir.

“Get Unstuck: Tools to Move Your Story Forward” with Richard Z. Santos

At some point, all writers hit a wall. The protagonist stares out the window, the story runs out of batteries, and the characters (and author) are left asking: “What now?” Whether you’re writing literary fiction, thrillers, romance, or even memoir, we’ll talk about how to use multiple, nested antagonists in order to move your story forward and get out of jams before they even start.
