DiversiTeen Book Club meets once a month at the library to talk about great YA books. Teens ages 12-18 are welcome to join and can choose to participate in-person or via Zoom. Each month, we discuss a different book, with a free copy of the book provided by the library in advance while supplies last.
New members should register if they would like to attend via Zoom and/or to receive a free copy of the book while supplies last. Existing or returning book club members do not need to register and walk-in attendees are also welcome at meetings. You must be 12-18 years to attend this program.

April's Book: Hollow Fires by Samira Ahmed

Synopsis:
Safiya Mirza wants to be a journalist. And one thing she's learned as editor of the newspaper at her fancy, cloistered private school in Chicago is that a reporter's job is to find the facts and not let her personal biases affect the story. But that all changes when Safiya follows a trail of half clues and hunches to the body of a murdered boy.
Jawad Ali was fourteen years old when he built a cosplay jet pack that a teacher mistook for a bomb. That mistake got him arrested. That arrest got him labeled a terrorist. That label got him killed. But he's more than a dead body, and he's more than "Bomb Boy." He was a person with a life that deserves to be remembered.
Guided throughout her investigation by Jawad's haunting voice, Safiya seeks to tell the truth about the murdered boy, the people who killed him because of their hate-based beliefs, and the silent complicity of the privileged bystanders who create alternative facts to bend the truth to their liking.
